Rooted in Tradition, Reimagined for Today: Meet The Dawg

Hailing from the great Land o’ Goshen, The Dawg is anything but a traditional acoustic trio. While their foundation is built on the sturdy pillars of bluegrass, folk, and gospel, this seasoned ensemble—featuring Duane Gundy, Jim Shenk, and Randy Horst—refuses to be boxed into a single genre. Formerly known as “Drop the Dawg,” the group rebranded in 2019 to reflect an evolving genre and its new membership.  Whether they are reimagining a classic standard or leaning into a country ballad, The Dawg has created a sonic signature on the stage that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern, proving acoustic music is a living, breathing art form.

Meet the Band

Duane playing the guitar

Dynamic lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. Known for his raspy and smooth voice, he keeps the folk energy soaring with his decades of experience on mandolin and guitar.

– Duane Gundy

Jim strumming the guitar

A master woodcrafter, the band performs on Jim’s custom built guitars, mandolins, and pedal steel. He anchors the Americana sound on guitar, pedal steel, and soulful middle harmonies.

– Jim Shenk

Randy playing the bass

A multifaceted artist – a professional in both the visual and musical arts – The Dawg’s upright bassist provides the group’s solid rhythmic undertones and soaring, high-register vocal harmonies.

– Randy Horst
